Urgent Care

Every pet owner’s worse fear is their furry companion suffering a serious injury or illness. Worse yet, if this situation happens outside of traditional veterinary clinic hours, it may very well feel like a disaster. At Forte, we are well-equipped to care for your pet’s urgent needs, and can direct you to the nearest emergency care animal hospital to you.

When Should I Seek Urgent Care for My Pet?

It can be difficult to determine your pet’s condition and if it is a true medical emergency that warrants an immediate trip to the animal hospital. Some symptoms may seem minor but, in case you don’t feel comfortable waiting until the next morning, here are some things to look for:

  • Swelling or painful eyes
  • Discharge or odor from the ears
  • Discharge, running or crust coming from the nose
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Inability to rest through the night
  • Constant coughing
  • Crying out in pain
  • Any trauma (such as being hit by a car or broken bones)
  • Poisoning or toxin ingestion
  • Seizure or tremors
  • Sudden collapse
  • Anything that makes you worried

This is by no means and all-inclusive list, but you know your pet the best, and will probably be the first to recognize when something seems out of the ordinary. The sooner an issue is diagnosed and dealt with, the less expensive and more effective the treatment usually is. Make sure you carefully observe your pet’s behavior and wellbeing daily, and take routine visits to the vet before a small concern turns into a serious emergency.

I’m Still Unsure if I Should Just Hold Off and Make a Regular Appointment with the Vet?

If you still can’t tell whether you should wait or not, it’s always safest just to take him in. Though many emergencies are not subtle such as collapse or a car accident, many life-threatening problems can start out as symptoms that don’t really seem like such a big deal in the beginning. Err on the side of caution and call or bring you pet in immediately. If we determine that the patient is in need of urgent care services, he will be referred or transferred directly to the Animal Emergency & Referral Center
